London’s higher education is world-renowned. This sector delivers skilled students, research excellence and innovation, supports growth and contributes to business and industry across the country. Its strengths shine through in the small specialist provision, the sheer range of courses offered, and the integrated education systems built as part of a widening participation agenda. For these reasons, London Higher welcomes the announced support for Uni Connect, crucial subjects like nursing, midwifery and allied health, and the recognition given to the vital role played by small and specialist institutions.
However, the letter sets out an overall reduction in funding, both in cash and real terms. This follows real term cuts last year, marking a worrying trend of continued erosion in resources at a time when institutions of all types are under growing pressure. This is contrary to the Government’s stated aims of growth and supporting higher education and is at odds with the ambitions set out in the London Growth Plan.
Annual shifts in priorities and changes to funding allocations hinder effective planning. London Higher invites collaboration with the government to understand regional impacts from changes and to support the sector in achieving long-term sustainability.
