London Higher welcomes the government’s £86 billion investment in UK science and technology research and development (R&D) confirmed in today’s Spending Review.
In London alone, our higher education institutions generate £27 billion in economic output and produce 140,000 skilled graduates annually – the highest number of any city globally. From world-leading specialists to research-intensive institutions and multi-faculty universities, London’s strength lies in its uniquely diverse higher education landscape and has been named best student city for six consecutive years.
Commenting on the confirmation of R&D investment in today’s spending review, Chief Executive Liz Hutchinson said:
“We welcome the government’s commitment to research and development as a clear recognition that R&D is key to building a more prosperous future for everyone.
The research that happens in London’s higher education institutions powers our economy and enriches our society locally, nationally and globally. Our members produce innovative research which drives the UK’s leading industries – such as life sciences, technology and the creative sector – while also strengthening public services including health and education. The collective impact of our members is both long-lasting and far-reaching, delivering benefits that extend far beyond the capital to support the economy, people and society across the UK.
To attract and retain the brilliant minds behind research and nurture the talent of the future, we need a healthy, diverse and strong higher education system. That requires joined-up thinking across all parts of government responsible for the sector, and open and continual dialogue between policymakers and our institutions—so that this investment rests on a foundation that is solid, secure and sustainable.”
