Best Laid Plans: London’s ‘Covid Cohort’ and Progression to Higher Education

AccessHE’s latest research report, drawing on a large-scale survey of 16-to-18–year–olds in London, shows Covid-19 hasn’t dampened young Londoners’ enthusiasm for going to university.

Whilst this is positive news for the HE sector, universities must be mindful of the key differences in how young people prepare for HE that are identified in the report. In particular, students from certain widening participation backgrounds are more likely to access HE advice and guidance via their school or an HE provider and therefore may benefit from structured, longer-term engagement opportunities.

The report also recommends the creation of a young Londoner HE progression committee to help instigate pan-London conversations between students, providers, schools and colleges. This voice would enrich discussion surrounding transition to HE in the post-pandemic period and enable the co-creation of appropriate support and curricula.
