Research Excellence

Network Aim: To explore and evaluate the depth and breadth of London’s research excellence in multiple fields; create a balanced picture of research in the capital; identify performance measures that reflect the full diversity of research activity; advocate and promote said excellence to various funders and stakeholders. This network seeks to build an appreciation among HE stakeholders of the strength of London as a centre of research excellence, to gain an understanding of the challenges and opportunities for research in London; and support research in London.

Prof. Carole-Anne Upton, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Global Impact and Innovation, Middlesex University London.

Previously Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Exchange and Engagement, Carole-Anne exercises leadership, and has responsibility for the University’s key areas of Research, Knowledge Exchange and En­gagement in the UK and internationally. Carole-Anne also line manages the Research and Knowledge Transfer Office.

She has served on various panels with the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), Higher Education Academy (HEA) and Jisc, and has been invited to review for research councils internationally in Portugal, Ireland, Finland, Norway and Austria. She was elected as an Honorary Life Member of the UK subject association for theatre and drama (SCUDD) which she led for a number of years. In recent years, she has been a role model for the Aurora Programme, supporting women’s career development in HE, and is a mentor as part of the REACH programme, supporting high performing civil servants with disabilities. Carole-Anne has previously held board positions at Hull Truck Theatre and with a small health charity. She is currently an academic trustee of the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and is a Fellow of the RSA.

Prof. Peter Griffiths , Director of Greenwich Research and Enterprise, University of Greenwich.

Peter is a Formulation Chemist, who joined Greenwich in 2012 after 17 years at Cardiff University. Throughout this period, he has contributed significantly to the creation, development and management of a range of academic and research activities. Most recently, he oversaw a significant evolution of the professional services research support structures Greenwich, contributing to a significantly improved REF2021 performance. Currently serving as an interim PVC for the Faculty of Engineering and Science, he brings this wealth of experience to one of four Faculties at the University as it embeds an ambitious new strategy.
